The dell latitude d600 batteries are designed to shut down even when all 6 cells inside are fully charged, based on some tests an internal circuit inside the battery case does. it checks the number of times the battery has been charged, the temperature of the battery and also the temperature of the series of flipflops that count up the charge cycles, it would appear from inspection of the circuit boards inside. the best information ive been able to find since my d600 quit last month, is that this was done after a dell battery overheated and exploded. in understandfable fear, it seems dell was a bit overly cautious in thier protecting consumers from exploding batteries and thus dell from law suits. im glad my battery wont explode, but the rub comes when a perfect fully charged bank of lithium ion cells is isloated from my computer and not allowed to run it by an overly zealous protective circuit, long before any malfunction whatever has occured in the batteries. this is the case we seem to have here atleast in my computer. the cuplrit seem to be that believing i was doing the battery good i charged it each time it began to run low on voltage, and indeed often plugged it in while using the machine if i was near a plugin and often unplugged it in the living room replugging it in in my bedroom when i went to bed or in the bathroom or in the basement, and still wanted to finish looking something up. i believe 500 charge cycles will shut the battery down. i had it for 3 months and unplugged it and plugged it back in up to ten times a day, unknowingly making another click in the battery death counter each time, if i averaged 6 times a day doing this, 500/6 would only take 83 days to reach the dread 500 cycles and abrupt shutdown. a more prudent thing to do after you buy a new battery would be to run it down about 3 hours then recharge once per day so it will run 500 days about 1 2/3 years. how long the battery cells them selves last i am unsure, but a friend who has one manufactured before the recall for exploding batteries, said his has been used for 5 years with no sign of failure. but he risks the possibility of a battery exploding some day. who knows when. i think a more economical approach, while still allowing a safety margin would be monitoring the temperature and the charge capabilities of the battery without regard to number of charge cycles, which would shut it down when there is some sign of a problem that may lead to any danger. but then i dont work for dell. so like you need to do, i just ordered another battery, but i will continue to research how the consarned internal circuit shuts the battery connections off. the problem is complicated by the multipin connector with unreachable female pins inside a connector and no pin out information. but no secret soo simple can stay huidden for ever. the problem is to determine which pins need the 11.1 volt battery output, to run the computer, and which need various other voltages, or resistances, just to tell the computer everything is ok, and providing these pinsw with what they need, so the computer wont reject the good batteries. until its solved though, just buy a battery.
\015\012another problem these computers have that shuts them down is poor coverage with silicon heatsink compound on the surfaces of the mocroprocessor and the heatsink, and crappy weak cooling fans. i have completely dissassembled (not recommended for amatures) my dell d600 3 times to replace the dead fan, to clean old dried out heatsink compound and replacement of it with new, and when my good battery refused to run the computer or to recharge and i incorrectly assumed bad connections and dissassembled it yet again looking for the bad connections, only to discover the designed failure of the internal battery circuit. -doug electronics tech for 50 years
Pls help.my dell latitude D600 has refused to come up,its battery is fully charged.nd if i plug the charger to main electric power and then plug to my laptop i noticed that the charger goes off.wht could be the problem??.
pls help,its urgent.
