Opening the dell 1707FP monitor - PC Desktops

To open the case, do the following:

1. Remove the base from the back of the monitor by pressing the large black button on the back.

2. Remove the 4 large black screws located under the plate you removed in step 1.

3. Along the left side, towards the top of the monitor, locate the seam that divides the front from the back of the monitor. This is located along the left side and is about 1/16" back from the front of the monitor.

4. Using a flat blade screwdriver with approx a 1/4" wide blade, work the screwdriver into the left side seam, almost to the top of the seam. Your screwdriver should be going into the crack between two pieces of black plastic.

5. Gently turn the screwdriver left and right until you feel the front separate from the back.

6. Once you have a "hole" to start working from, gently pry the rear cover away from the front bezel. Make sure that the bottom right corner (closest to the power and adjustment buttons) is the last part of the front that you attempt to pry apart. Be extremely careful in this area, as the buttons are part of a small circuit board attached to the front bezel. While it seems like front bezel is the piece to remove, actually you want to remove the back case first. Pulling the front bezel too far away from the LCD screen itself can damage the flex circuit. Once you remove the back cover, you should be able to see the red and white flex circuit that goes to the front panel circuit board.

7. Gently fold the bezel away from the LCD screen, keeping the bottom edge of the bezel close to the screen. Again, use caution not to damage the flex.

8. Once this is done you should be able to see a green circuit board with 5 very small phillips head screws. Remove the screws and find a safe place for them. Once this board is removed you should be able to see the cracked button. In my case I just removed the pieces of the button and powered on the monitor using a small q-tip. Once reassembled, the actual button is inside the hole, but off to the left. The two contacts that you see directly behind where the button used to be are LEDs to indicate the power is on.

NOTE: In place of a q-tip, you can use any small, non-metallic, not sharp object. A pointy pencil eraser might work well too.

Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly. Hope this helps!
