Need to replace screen hinges - Acer Aspire 9500 Notebook

Answers :

Tools Needed\015\012\015\012Fine Phillips screwdrivers, two sizes; a fine flathead\015\012screwdriver; a big heavy-duty set of locking pliers to get a grip on the\015\012barrel of the fine screwdrivers in two instances; screen wipes; a clean\015\012working surface in which you won't lose any screws.\015\012
\015\012Lesson Learned\015\012\015\012The method I should have used:\015\012
  • \015\012Shut down the computer.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Unplug AC power cable.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Use the sliding tab to remove the battery.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Close the LCD screen as best as you can. Flip the laptop upside down.\015\012Look along the left and right edges, close to the LCD hinges, for a screw on\015\012each side; mine were marked F10. Remove these two screws, which look fairly\015\012insubstantial.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Flip the laptop back over, as if you were going to be using it. Open the\015\012screen fully (180 degrees) so it's pointing up at your ceiling.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Spin the laptop around such that the right side is just off the edge of\015\012the table. There's a big plastic piece, actually two colors, occupying the\015\012last 2 1/2 inches (60 cm) of the laptop toward the hinges; mine has a small\015\012microphone hole near one end and a line of buttons for power, Web browser,\015\012etc.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Use your thumb from underneath to pry off the edge; the whole piece will\015\012begin to lift up. Work it out, being careful to note the two big\015\012semi-circular pieces that have to lip up around the laptop hinges. Set this\015\012piece carefully aside, and be nice to it -- it has a number of buttons.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012You should be seeing a small green circuit board where all your buttons\015\012were. A single Phillips screw is in the middle; remove a surprisingly long\015\012screw and set it aside. GENTLY remove the green circuit board, by lifting up\015\012slowly from the right; a small silver plastic tab will keep the board from\015\012lifting up directly on the left.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Underneath, you should now see a relatively heavy wire with a connector\015\012coming from the left LCD hinge. Use the flathead screw driver to gently pry\015\012up one edge of the connector slightly, then the other edge. Pry a couple\015\012more times until it seems loose, then lift up by the cable.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Your LCD is now held by just one small wire bundle and whatever's left of\015\012your hinges. Go after the wire first.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Just above your keyboard, you should see two Phillips screws that\015\012actually hold the keyboard in. Remove this -- and don't be afraid, because\015\012they're very stubborn. I had to use the small Phillips screwdrivers and a\015\012locking wrench clamped on them to get enough of a grip to loosen these. Keep\015\012pushing down so you don't strip the screws. This was the hardest part of\015\012disassembly for me. Set the screws aside.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012The keyboard slides up -- not in the sense of toward your face, but\015\012toward the laptop hinges. Slide it a short distance and you can then flip it\015\012upside down.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Follow that last wire coming from your LCD, which routes under the\015\012keyboard. On the 4652lmi (lets hope your model is somewhat similar), it's\015\012the wireless antenna. Two connectors hold it to the card; they pry up, but\015\012not particularly easily. Note which side goes to which; the white wire (aux)\015\012was on the right for mine.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012When the connectors are loose, unroute the wire, freeing it up to the\015\012hinges.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012This is probably a good time to slide the keyboard back into place and\015\012turn the screws a couple of times.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012You should now have the LCD free, except for the remaining hinges\015\012themselves.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012At the extreme edges of the corners, you'll see a triangular shaped piece\015\012of metal. That's the base of the hinge; a single screw on each now holds it\015\012in. Remove the screws. Lift the LCD straight up from the main body of the\015\012laptop. (Stuck? You -did- remove those screws from underneath in the first\015\012step, right? I didn't.)\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Put the body of the laptop aside. You can now focus entirely on the LCD\015\012package itself.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012At the top of the screen are two rubber caps, indented somewhat from the\015\012corners. Use your flat screw driver to scrape these away. No, you can't\015\012really reuse 'em, but at least the screws underneath are black. Leave the\015\012screws in place for a few moments.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Toward the bottom corners of the screen are a couple more covers made of\015\012mylar, like a balloon. Scrape them from the bottom edge with the screw\015\012driver. These you surely can't reuse.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Undo the four Phillips screws that you've now exposed.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Starting at one corner, -gently- slide the flathead screw driver into the\015\012bezel, the giant black plastic ring, around the LCD screen. Start to loosen\015\012the bezel, using fingers, screw drivers and prayer to work it loose without\015\012cracking it. If you get stuck on one direction, go in the other for a time.\015\012Once it's free, the bezel simply lifts straight up. Set it aside, and make\015\012sure you don't put anything on top of it.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Only do one hinge at a time. The hinges run along the edge of the LCD\015\012panel itself and wrap around at the top.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012One heavier screw holds on the hinge at the bottom, on the innermost of\015\012two holes in the tab. Remove this screw.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Four smaller screws run along the edges of the hinge. Remove -- being\015\012careful not to slide 'em under the LCD, or drop 'em into your carpet. You\015\012may need to use two screwdrivers or a screwdriver and a thumb to lift them\015\012away from the LCD case.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012The hinge should lift directly up. Set it aside, so you can show all your\015\012friends what a wonderful laptop technician you are later.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012The new hinge should drop directly in. It won't. It's got to stay very\015\012close to the LCD panel, inside of a number of alignment tabs sticking up\015\012from the edge of the case. At the top of the case, a hole in the hinge part\015\012has to slide onto a small plastic part that sticks up. On the bottom, it has\015\012to slide into position on top of the two screw holes.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Try to put in one of the four side screws. They won't go. Use the small\015\012flathead screwdriver to gently, gently lift the LCD screen very slightly\015\012until you can put in the side screws.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Replace the screw on the bottom tab, with the screw on the inside hole.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Repeat for the other side of the LCD panel.\015\012
\015\012\015\012"Assembly is the reverse of disassembly." Yeah.\015\012
\015\012General Cautions\015\012
  • \015\012Make sure your antenna and LCD wires go through the designated holes near\015\012the hinge openings; don't pinch them when you put the bezel on.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012The bezel will snap into place, seemingly by making lots of snapping\015\012noises. It probably won't be snapped into place in the right places. If one\015\012of your four LCD panel cover screws doesn't go in, you probably need to\015\012remove the screw completely and put pressure on the bezel again to re-snap\015\012it.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Remember the lower hinges have to drop down into the base of the laptop.\015\012Secure them with one screw on the top ... and, as your very last step, put\015\012in the less substantial screws from the bottom of the laptop.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012The wireless card connectors are tough to put on. If you get them in\015\012position, you can use the back of a fine screwdriver to snap them into\015\012place.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012Remember to open your screen 180 degrees before putting on the large\015\012plastic piece with the buttons and lights. Don't force the hinge cover parts\015\012through your wires; that would be, in technical terms, bad.\015\012
  • \015\012
  • \015\012As the final step, close the laptop, flip it upside down, place the two\015\012remaining hinge screws from underneath.\015\012
