Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop will not bootup properly

\015 On bootup, my Dell will get to the Windows XP screen, I can hear the windows startup tones, then I get a black screen. I tried a Windows recovery CD but I am having problems since my Home Edition CD (I have a key to this one) is not with me, I have a copy of Professional with no product key. Computer would boot in safe mode with CD in, not without, now if I plug in my desktop monitor to the laptop, I can access everything. I'm really confused! Can anyone help?\015

Answers :

I started having the same problem. I think my system recovery information is stored internally on the computer but I do not remember what that restore key is. Can someone please remind me?
\015\012Thanks. I cannot get beyond the blue screen and safe mode or anything like that doesn't seem to work.
Yes, very confusing.
\015\012
\015\012The thing that really confuses me is that you say you can only boot into safe mode with the CD installed. But ignoring that for the moment I would check these things:
\015\012
\015\012First, I read about a person who had this symptom and they found that the small mechanical switch that disables the display when the laptop is closed was stuck. They took some tweezers and wiggled it loose. It would be great if that's your problem, but I'd be surprised..
\015\012
\015\012Next thing I would try is whatever key strokes enable/disable your internal/external monitors. According to the manual I thnk this is FN F8.
\015\012
\015\012Next, using your external display, I would right click on the desktop and select Properties, then Settings. Take a look at the resolution, is it reasonable? I would also click on Advanced and polk around. Different display adapters have different Advanced settings so I cannot tell you exactly what to look for. If you start changing things, you might want to write down the original settings so you can get back to where you started.
\015\012
\015\012I would also right click on My Computer, then select Properties, then the Hardware tab and click on Device Manager. Are there any exclamation points or question marks next to the entry for your display adapter.
\015\012
\015\012Now the editorial section. I don't get paid for this. I know this is a strange hobby, but I like to help when I can. This problem may have on of many causes and some of them may be hardware related which means there'll be no way for anyone on this website to solve it. The reason posts like this sometimes go unanswered is because we're in an informal competition on this site to get good ratings...stupid I know, but nonetheless. I don't expect you to rate this as fixed if it's not, but I would hope I've at least provided some "Helpful" information.
\015\012
\015\012I'm happy to help more so if nothing above works please feel free to let me know. Thanks and good luck.
