Loss of wireless range in laptop

\015 Dell c 800 laptop has internal wireless card. Worked fine until recently when it lost contact in any room except where the wireless router is. Other computers in the house are working normally with the router. Is the internal card going bad?\015

Answers :

That is a possibility, however, try cleaning the contacts where the two leads are for the wireless antenna hooks to the card and reconnect them. It could be that they are dirty or have worked loose. If that has no effect, then take the machine somewhere that has free wifi and see what kind of range you're getting by seeing how far you can get from the place with the card still seeing the network. This will tell you if it's the card or your wireless router at home, these go out too. Keep in mind that most McDonald's, Hardee's, or Wendy's with wifi have barrier film on their windows to force people to come inside to use their network, hoping you'll purchase something. Most motels with wifi do not have this barrier film and keep their routers on the roof or central location. You don't have to be actually connected to the internet, if the card sees the network, then it's working properly.
There could be some sort of interference going on.
\015\012
\015\012There are two ways that you can fix the problem:
\015\012
\015\0121) See if your wireless router can support a bigger antenna. Linksys has that feature for their routers.
\015\012
\015\0122) Disable your wireless adaptor and go with a USB wireless adaptor or better yet a PCMCIA adaptor if your computer has one. That will increase reception since these devices have an antenna like shape to them.
