Having problems with your eMachines EL1600-01 ?
Unmountable boot volume
\015 Ok, so I bought a new eMachines desktop and downloaded some games. One of them required me to turn off cache and shadowing. I went into the BIOS setup by pressing Del when I first turn on the computer. I looked but could not find the option, so I exited and tried looking in the boot options. Nothing was there either so I exited and restatted the computer. Now everytime it gets to the user login screen, it automaticaly restart. I went back to the BIOS setup, thinking I pressed a wrong button and put everything back to the default setting. Nothing changed, so I searched the web and learned to press F8 during the boot up sequence and disable the option "restart after system failure" (or something worded close to that) and a blue screen appeared after the user login screen, telling me I have an unmountable boot volume.\015\012 So I searched this up online again, with a guide telling me to go to the microsoft website and download a reboot file to 6 floppy disks and that should make evrything work again. Only thing is, I don't have a floppy disk drive in my computer and it's I can't find an option to use CD Roms instead. So what do I do? Help please!\015
Hopefully you have a windows installation cd or a recovery cd. If you do then you need to install it into your cd rom drive. Reboot the computer and you will see a message that says to press any key to boot from CD. If you do not get this message and it goes straight to your boot screen then you should re-enter your BIOS and change the boot order so that the computer will boot from the CD first. Then reboot (if this was the case). When you enter the windows set up you will want to press R to start the recovery console. Select your windows OS by pressing the number corresponding with the listing for windows (most likely "1"). Then you will want to enter your administrative password. If you don't have one, just press enter. This should bring you to a command prompt. Once at the command prompt type CHKDSK. This will perform a scan of your hardrive and fix any errors. Upon restart, your computer should boot into windows. If not, then repeat this process, but instead of CHKDSK, type in fixmbr. Hope this helps.
There are several options. This is what I would do: Go to the E-Machines site and get the fix from them. If they don't have it I would down load the files to the hard drive and burn a CD. When you make the cd ensure your folders are labeled DISK1, DISK2, ... there should be 1 folder for each disk and then make a folder DSK and put all the files in that folder. As long as none of them share a name you should be good. The cd will need to be Bootable. Boot the machine from the CD and try running the fix from teh DSK folder. If that does not work. Reboot the machine from the cd, Open the Disk1 folder and startt the program. Now, if none of that works or you feel you haven''t really put anything on the computer you need to keep the fastest option to get back up and running is to put the CD that came with the E-machine in the drive and reboot the computer. Choose Repair system or Restore to Factory settings when the menu appears. One of these options will work if your harddrive is not damaged.
