Having problems with your Sony PC Laptops ?

I was watching an exercise DVD this morning on my Vaio and after about half an hour the image on the screen was replaced with different coloured blocks / stripes. I had to turn the computer off with the power switch. I think the fans were blocked and it overheated - is this a temporary problem that will resolve when the laptop cools down?

Answers :

There are 2 likely causes for this problem. 1, the screen is damaged. 2, there is a problem with the connection between the screen and the motherboard. The latter is the most likely.
\015\012Do you get the lines while booting too?
\015\012Try this.
\015\012Remove any bootable CD or DVD, press F8 repeatedly while booting, don't hold down the key, choose Enable VGA mode from the boot choices menu.
That loads Windows normally except it forces Windows to use default VGA drivers that all video adapters and motherboards support.
Try the computer for a while.
- If the lines do not appear in that mode, you probably have a problem with your video drivers - un-install them, in Enable VGA mode or in Normal mode, then install them again. The proper video drivers are in the downloads for your model on the HP web site.

\015\012- If the lines appear in that Enable VGA mode in the same way, you probably have a hardware problem.
Since it last worked properly...
Have you EVER spilled liquid on this laptop, or has been exposed to liquid such as rain?
It doesn't matter whether it was running at the time or not - the ATX motherboard is always powered in some places as long as the main battery is in the laptop.

\015\012Has this laptop EVER been dropped?
\015\012Do the lines appear and disappear depending on what position the laptop lid is in?
\015\012- if your laptop has a port you can connect a regular monitor to, connect one and try your computer for a while.
If you get no errant lines, there's nothing wrong with the video adapter or the drivers for it - the problem is between the video adapter and the LCD display, or in the LCD circuits, or the voltage inverter for the backlight in the LCD display is faulty.
